About Haifa

Haifa is the third largest city in Israel. It is one of the most beautiful and multicultural cities across the country. Haifa has gorgeous beaches, scenic views from Mount Carmel, and forests perfect for hiking. It is the home of the magnificent Bahai Gardens and Temple, theaters, concert halls, restaurants, and museums. These are only a few of the beauties that can be found in Haifa.

The people of Haifa are from a variety of different backgrounds. They come from diverse religions, cultures, and ethnicities. “Jews, Arabs, Druze, Muslims, Christians, and Bahai all live together, side by side, and work together with mutual respect”. This allows Haifa to have great coexistence between everyone living here. Haifa is also home to two of Israel’s leading universities, the University of Haifa and the Technion. The students who study here have brought a vibrant student and nightlife into the city.

Haifa nightlife is found throughout the city. Masada Street is known for its street art right in the center of Haifa. Walking the streets you’ll come across a variety of different bars and cafes that come alive at night. Talpiot Market is the perfect place to buy fruits, vegetables, spices and much more! Downtown Haifa is an up and coming area and is turning out to be the “next big thing”. The atmosphere in Haifa perfect for your next experience in Israel.

In The Classroom

Haifa’s heterogeneous population is reflected in the schools, where children from various religious, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds learn together. Many children are bilingual, making learning English their third language. In Israeli schools, it is mandatory to learn English which can be extremely difficult. Being in school for 20-25 hours a week, you will become immersed with these students from a variety of different backgrounds. Not only will the students learn from you but you have the opportunity to learn from them as well.

By helping the children learn English, you will be making a great impact on Israel’s society and each child’s education. That being said, you are guaranteed a rewarding experience. English is taught in small groups to give individual attention to each student. Some of these students have never spoken with a native English speaker, making it a very unique and exciting experience. You will have the opportunity to personalize your teaching methods and be creative as you get to know each student. The chance to make a real impact is great. The children will view you as an educator and mentor, allowing you to impact each child’s life.

Where You’ll Live

You will have the opportunity to live in newly renovated and shared suites located in the center of Haifa. These gorgeous accommodations in Haifa are close to the beach, stores, restaurants, bars, as well as an outdoor market. The building is a hub for young professionals, international students, and other Masa program participants.

Public transportation is easily accessible and runs on Saturday connecting all the neighborhoods in Haifa. Haifa is the largest city in Israel that buses run on Shabbat, perfect for beach Saturdays. Haifa owns the only underground train known as the Carmelit that has multiple stops from the bottom of Haifa all the way to the top. If you want to spend a weekend away, there are many fast trains that link Haifa to other major cities and are extremely fast and convenient. The train to Tel Aviv takes less than an hour!

About Israel Experience

Masa Israel Teaching Fellows in Haifa is organized by Israel Experience. The Israel Experience is a subsidiary and the educational arm of the Jewish Agency for Israel. We are committed to providing you with innovative and high-quality programs, and we work hard to make sure our programs are creative, meaningful, and memorable. It is important to us that you get the most out of your teaching program in Israel, at Israel Experience.

Israel Experience gives participants the opportunity to immerse themselves into Israeli society and culture, providing structured independence throughout their stay. Israel Experience makes the effort to train its staff to help provide safety and security, and the relevant framework in and out of the workplace and in the city. But we also understand the participants' need for freedom and independence. IE prides itself on finding the correct balance between structure and independence - providing the safety net to all participants but at the same time giving them the ability to explore, adventure, learn from their mistakes, and have a great Israel Experience.
